Jazz Artist of the Week
Miles Davis - Prestige Recordings
Four albums were recorded by the Miles Davis Quintet over three marathon recording sessions in 1955 and 1956: Workin', Relaxin', Steamin', and Cookin'. Most of the tracks were completed in one take. What was the rush? Davis was eager to get started with his new recording label, Columbia, but needed to fulfill a four album deal with Prestige. The result is some of the best combo jazz recordings ever. This was primarily a live group that went into the studio and recorded what they would have been playing in the clubs. These albums serve as the greatest "how to" instruction manual for students of the jazz combo. Want to get some gigs?...Play like this!
